I feel that the closest railroad analogy to the Eastern Airlines situation was when Timothy Mellon formed the Guilford System which consolidated the Boston & Maine, Delaware & Hudson and Maine Central to form the Guilford System during the 1980s. Guilford's labor relations were abysmal and the employees went on strike. I lived in Albany, NY at the time and remember that many in the area viewed Mellon like others viewed Lorenzo.
Track deteriorated to the point that Amtrak shifted the Montrealer off B & M to the Central Vermont. The D & H entered bankruptcy in 1988. Eventually, Canadian Pacific acquired the the D & H.
Guilford is now Pan Am Railways.
