22nd Street Bridge, Last Of Its 1906 Kind, Being Removed This Weekend

Another vestige of the SP past disappears. The bridge carries pedestrian and car traffic over the cut that runs between tunnels 1 and the double-bore tunnel 2. There was a bridge at the other end of the station at 23rd street that came out last year I think. These were two wonderful railfanning spots for catching the evening commutes in a nice sidelight. Some great shots taken here back in the SP days before 280 was retrofitted and the freeway columns were significantly upsized. The bridges had a lot of character even if they were frankly pretty ugly. They are being removed because they aren't seismically safe.

Someone should go by and ask for the bridge builder's plate.
