So ... drive them to Lombard, add flatcars, and send out in a Cal Northern train to UP? One at a time or maybe several?
Does seem odd that the engine change can't be handled in a reasonably well equipped railroad shop. Though for "warranty service" it's understandable that the builder would want control over the whole process. The trip adds to the time for the work, though. If an engine change is required (say, for heavy maintenance - change engines and get the cars back in service quickly) during normal operation, would SMART be able to handle it? Did the Canadians have to return their cars to Nippon Sharyo, too?
