To generalize a little bit: to enter and use main track outside of yard limits you need authority from the DS. The most common ways on the class 1s are:
CTC, in which you need a proceed indication from a controlled signal or verbas authority from the DS.
Interlocking, essentially the same as CTC, although the "DS" might be a tower operator, except for automatic interlockings, where if you don't get a proceed indication you follow the instructions in the lockbox or TTSI
TWC, in which you need a track warrant, which is issued by the DS (over the radio).
DTC, essentially the same as TWC
