IRWINDALE >> A collision pushed a car into the path of an oncoming Metrolink train Tuesday night. The train struck the car but the driver escaped, officials said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said no one in the train was injured.

The crash happened on Irwindale Avenue, south of Edna Place around 10:40 p.m. It is located in the unincorporated county area near Irwindale.

Jimenez said a Nissan Altima northbound on Irwindale Avenue stopped when the railroad arms came down. But the Hyundai Tiburon behind it didn’t.

The Hyundai rear-ended the Nissan and pushed the car onto the railroad tracks, according to Jimenez.

“The Nissan became disabled,” he said.

He said the driver, a 43-year-old Azusa man, got out of the car before Train 336 of the Metrolink San Bernardino Line hit the Nissan.

There were 92 passengers on board the train.

The railroad track at that location was closed in both directions until 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, Jimenez said.
