No, 2 units, one dead and the other an old GP-9 out of the Wat. Jct.- Salinas pool. We were down to about 10 mph for a bit and thought we would have to double the hill. (You know we all got out & pushed)
Many a trip on the ECP we only had one unit and you would slip and crawl to get on tangent track at Cuesta. The fireman or both brakeman would be beating on the sanders with a hammer or take out the plug and pour sand on the ball of the rail to keep traction. Otherwise you would be put away at Margarita waiting on a helper, in the middle of 12 & 13 on the hill. That shot any possible quit and added almost 3 to 4 hours to your trip.
Oh ya, the good times of getting over the road.
