Your riding on the back of a covered hopper reminds me of a day at the east end of the eight mile Stampede Tunnel. I waited until the doors opened to let a west bound enter, as it did I saw three happy people waving from under the end of one of the hoppers. I wondered at the time how happy and black they looked as they exited eight miles later with four units on dynamic preceding them.
