Note: UP's oil and gas business was not bought to "diversify" its holdings. UP's oil and gas business have been an integral and profitable part of the company for at least 90 years. Land grants in the original construction included thousands of parcels with oil and gas deposits from Rock Springs, Wyoming to the East LA Yards and Terminal Island, which UP developed, including significant pipeline development. UP pumped so much oil from under Terminal Island in the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach, that the island started to sink, and UP had to "pump up" the island by repressurizing the oil field under it. I know this, because my uncle did this task as one of his first jobs with UP as an engineer in the 1950's, later he became a VP for natural resources at UP.
