Boxcar Grain Doors

Having grown up in Whitman County Washington State, I recently was in a conversation on the dozens of grain elevators in Eastern Washington. Of course 99% of these elevators were built during the days of 40' boxcars, using wooden grain doors to hold in the product while being loaded. I remember the numerous piles of grain doors at elevators waiting to be used; but I was curious the business end of the situation. Were the elevators charged for those items when they arrived by the carload for future use?....I vaguely remember the railroad name stamped on them...I would be grateful if somebody could explain "how things worked" in that sector of grain operations!
