Western Pacific Mixed Trains

There was a question earlier about WP mixed trains. Have some answers on them now.

In the early years (1910-1918) the WP ran a number of mixed trains, including a tri-weekly train from Salt Lake City to Shafter, NV to connect with the Nevada Northern. This train eventually extended to Elko, NV, but only ran from November 1908 to August 1910. There was also an early daily except Sunday mixed from Oroville to Portola that ran for a few months in 1910.

A mixed ran between Stockton and Tesla (on the old Alameda and San Joaquin) tri-weekly from January 1910 until November 1914.

Also starting in January 1910 was a mixed train to Loyalton from Hawley Jct. where it connected with B&L trains (an interesting case as the B&L ran into Portola). This train would have various changes in run and symbols, being discontinued at times, but in February 1918 was basically reversed and became a train from Loyalton to B&L Junction, running daily except Sunday. In May 1923, this was changed to the northbound train terminating in Beckwith and the southbound starting in Hawley. This only lasted until November when both terminated and originated in Hawley. (all in California) In 1951, they southbound train originates in Portola, while the northbound continues to terminate in Hawley. (In fact all these trains were based out of Portola in all likelihood and consider photographic records, just the passenger carriage was shown between the listed terminals.) Mixed trains to Loyalton terminated in September 1958. These were the last mixed trains on the WP proper.

A tri-weekly mixed operated between Portola and Calpine, CA on that Calpine branch from March 1922 to May 1923, then from Calpine to Calpine Jct. (between Portola and Beckwourth, right where county road A-23 crosses the mainline today) until May 1940 when the branch was abandoned.

A daily mixed ran between Portola and Reno from August 1931 until July 1945 when Sunday service was eliminated. In July 1947, this train was discontinued and passenger service to Reno ended.

Mixed train service on the Deep Creek Railroad was published in WP timetables from November 1918 until March 1920. The DC was a WP subsidiary. This service continued until the end of the DC in July 1939.

There were some special operations on the High Line, including a logger's commuter operation that used ex-SN interurbans that were demotored and some kind of mixed train from Keddie to Westwood, but I do not have much info on those.
