Absolutely ride to Bend. The ride uphill thru the Dechutes River Canyon is incredible. No thru roads there, and since it will be warm you can have the dutch doors open, and listen to the #4449 working up hill. I crewed in 2012 and the sounds were off the charts. Doyle does not use the diesel. Its there only to provide HEP. There were times on the 2.1% grade with the 14 cars, (including the aux.tender which weights 170 tons) the speed dropped to 10 mph at times. The stack talk reverberating off the walls was amazing.
