More taxes may well be needed, but there is a lack of public trust. Yes, America has a huge bill in unpaid "depreciation" of our current ageing infrastructure, as we live off of the taxes our parents and grandparent paid to build the interstates, bridges, transit systems, aquaducts, water systems, sewers, and railways.
While it's true, you can only get what your willing to pay for, the public will need to see that America is still capable of doing such things in a more competent, consistent, and cost effective manner, if you expect them to vote yes on more gas tax funding. And, unfortunately, all too often, what the public does see are monumental, bloated, costly, and poorly planned political contract steering fiasco's like the CHSRA, that will do nothing for their morning commute or potholed freeway.
Those who have read the last Federal rail bill will understand that we are already prepared to takeover these successful State supported "Amtrak" services in CA, regardless of our lack of any coherent national policy....
