Before 1892, there were two. That section of the line hugged the Rio Grande and was very scenic. The Pecos River Viaduct opened in 1892 and the river section was abandoned.
Later, after SP acquired the EP&SW there were years that some Sunset Route trains ran directionally on the North Line through Deming or on the South Line through Douglas. The South Line had a tunnel just west of El Paso called Bowen Tunnel. It was eventually daylighted. Today's Amtrak "Sunset Limited" sometimes passes through the deep cut that was once Bowen Tunnel.
