pnw,
Like I stated, I've not been active for quite a while, however, although my first love is Steam, and I am known to refer to Diesels as Dismals, I am first and foremost a preservationist. For about 5 years I was the paid restorer at the Portola Railroad museum (old name)and painted multiple Diesels, including WP 805A and WP2001 and did some mechanical work, although I was directed to "stick to painting!" So, I do have an appreciation for first and second generation "dismals." Which is why I hope they don't do something to 6402 that would render it unoperable, or unrestorable. Had I been in Dennis' place, I sure would have encouraged their restoration work (for one thing, it would then, and now, be more likely to be accepted for travel on "other railroads." It's present use as an interpretive piece is valid, as most folks never get to see what's "under the skin," and handicap access would always be an issue for an intact locomotive. I imagine with present funding levels, we should be happy it's inside, under cover, and protected from vandals.
Eric, yes, I was trying to be polite--no sense in trying to make any enemies! I remember the Unit Shop being called, "Dennis' Dismantling Works." This is why GR was looking for a Project Manager for their locomotive--they wanted it running again. That kind of support for a donated item is almost unheard of, and they should be recognized for it. When Dennis was hired, I was on the third tier of finalists--probably the best I ever did when trying to get on with the state parks. That was a long time ago "in a galaxy far, far, away." (for those unfamiliar with the State hiring system, I believe that put me as the 3rd to 5th person considered--probably still too far down the list! Oh Well. . . )
