The third rail was a coupla feet below the surface and split into two 'rails' separated by 8 or so inches. So even jamming something straight down would not get contact. At the edges of the city there were "plow pits" where men attached and detached the current picker upper- the plow. It was sprung between the contact rails on each side.
New York City also used a conduit system
