SP 4839 had the sheel metal wedge, installed in the late fall each year for flanger / spreader service. SP 4817 & 4809 ( at least ) had "ghetto grates " that appeared to be a permanent installation. I have also seen an image of an Espee GP-38-2 snow unit that had louvers over the center windshields. Note also that Espee had changed out the L-shaped engineers' windshield.
The change - out of Blomberg type M trucks for standard Blombergs was due to insufficient braking from the Type M set-up. No sign of the park brake chain as used on GP-60's though. Above info from photos in Joe Strapac's Southern Pacific Historic Diesels Volume 21.
