The Newsweek article, included by Larry, includes a brief description of the service mentioned in the title above. Technically, this service passes thru three "worlds" of railroads.
China's railroads are 4' 8 1/2" gauge (British influence - at least they didn't choose Cape Gauge)
Russia chose 5' 6" (afraid invaders would use their railroads / didn't help much)
All of Europe, except the Iberian Peninsula, is 4' 8 1/2". Wonder if they trade out bogies at the boundaries - or regauge the bogies, Iberian style.
And I suspect that China, Russia, and Western Europe have variations in freight car design and maintenance. Would be interesting to learn how these regions have learned to live by one set of standards.
