Wow. Writers on this forum are not paying attention to the
details and missing the forest for the trees.
This is not about trains moving through San Rafael.
It is about the required relocation of the Bettini Bus Transit
Center just south of the San Rafael SMART station. It is currently
used by 9,000 bus transit riders per workday and bisected by SMART's
row.
Yes, it's true, everyone is to blame for not recognizing this
issue long ago. San Rafael is to blame. So is Marin's Transportation
Authority. And how come Golden Gate Transit has sat on its hands?
And what was the MTC thinking in providing $20 MM to SMART for the
extension without figuring out what to do with the transit center.
And for sure SMART buried it.
SMART's Environmental Assessment on the extension was a total white wash. Completely ignored the evidence that cars would
be pushed into Hwy 101 because of the at-grade crossings and delays
from buses parking, maneuvering, and bus passengers running across
major arteries to make transfers.
So, it's not the train. It's the transit center. No place to move
it. The current proposal is to park buses on city streets. It's
not only a traffic issue that hasn't been fully addressed, it's a bus
passenger safety issue as there are lots of transfers occurring at
the center.
All this for at most a couple hundred rail passengers.
The lack of strategic thinking is appalling. It is a real mess
and while Farhad is promoting the claim that San Rafael has no choice
he is very badly mistaken.
More to come. Rumors are of an initiative or referendum depending
on what the legal options are. That alone would delay SMART.
And meanwhile as this forum knows, does anyone think passenger service
will start up in late spring? What about next fall? Etc.
Would you tear apart your city before train service has even started?
Stand by. This could turn into a war between the counties.
