Back in the early 1970's, someone ( Fairmont ??? ) designed & built a tie extractor that cut the tie into 3 pieces, just inside both rails. Then the claws simply grabbed the middle and butt end pieces & tossed them off to the side. Faster than the old method I guess, but it turned a used tie, worth into a few bucks at resale, into 3 useless chunks that were now an environmental hazard. I recall Penn Central used this machine for a few years.
