NP's Challengers, classes Z-6, Z-7, and Z-8 all had front mounted air pumps. Picture below is Z-8 class 5140 leaving the siding at Athol ID on 9/22/1957 - the very last run of an NP Challenger.

Other NP power having front mounted air pumps included the Z-5 2-8-8-4 Yellowstones, Z-4 class 2-8-8-2, and W-5 class 2-8-2 Mikados.

The C&O also had engines with front mounted air pumps.
