Our miserly ancestors who survived the depression and WWII are the ones who would not vote to save the trolleys in every city of America. They were just so used to being frugal that they could not vote for public monies to be spent on rebuilding rail transit.
But by the late 50's the country would be in an economic boom and the middle class would have a high standard of living on one income and still have disposable income. Unfortunately by then the trolleys were gone and it was too late to save them. Oh well, who needed a trolley when you had an 18-foot long land yacht from Detroit and open roads to take you everywhere?
