In transit applications, where wheel and rail condition is generally good, roller bearings can last about 400,000 miles. The limit is the life of the grease. Before asbestos was removed from grease the life of the grease was about 700,000 miles.
Roller bearings are to be changes when ever the wheels are changed. I do not think there are any railroad applications where the wheels last 400,000 miles so bearing life should not be an issue. The leading cause of roller bearing failure is the bearing end cap bolts loosen up resulting is a loss of proper lateral clearance. Bolts loosing up is usually a result of vibration. There is a variety of products on the market now to try and address this problem.
