"Massive Disturbances" is highly exaggerated. Affected were display boards (which are obviously using Windows, and some are still on Windows XP). The attack did not affect anything safety-related or operation-related.

Problems with the display boards are not uncommon, and people have to rely on announcements.

According to some German media, the reason why the attack was "surprising" is that some US agency knew about the problem for a long time, but kept it secret, allowing them to make use of it.
