The range of railway gauges in Australia varies by state:

New South Wales built to 4'-8 1/2"

Victoria and South Australia built to 5'-3"

Queensland and Western Australia built to 3'-6"

These variations still exist today, although lines connecting the major cities (for example, Sydney to Melbourne, Sydney to Brisbane) were built or re-laid as standard gauge. The transcontinental line from Sydney in New South Wales to Perth in Western Australia was not completely standard-gauged until 1970.
