In the 1970's, the Urban Mass Transit Administration had a program to develop a standard light rail vehicle (SLRV) to replace the PCC streetcar.

Boeing-Vertol (the helicopter division of Boeing) designed and built SLRV's for San Francisco MUNI and Boston's MBTA. They were the first streetcars built in the USA since 1952.

The SLRV design was never built again. San Francisco's cars were replaced with Breda cars (Italian).
