UP is in the process of finally double tracking the entire Sunset Route. Trains magazine did an outstanding article on this, which had a map identifying planned dates. Much of the Alhambra sub work may be done as early as 2009-2010. The work at Walnut may have to do with the grade separation projects near Walnut which Alameda Corridor East is doing at several locations, these may also involve some temporary and permanent realignments. It is my understanding that UP is coordinating their double tracking with some of these projects. I haven't been to this location lately, so others may have more details
