If you're talking about the large hose connections on the ends of the cars those were not for steam heat - they were so the cars could be connected together with large hoses so they could draw water out of multiple cars at once. Up here in Oregon, until UP changed everything, the cars were coupled in 2 or 3 car sets: 1 car with a pump and 1 or 2 plain cars but all cars would be connected with large hoses so they could pump from all cars at once if needed.
