Actually all of those units in the UP 2900's were rebuilt, by the UP in fact as part of their Life Extension Program. The UP just made an administrative decision that they were done with the tunnel motors, as the economy was way down, and they only wanted switching friendly locomotives (step wise for the crews) as part of their SD40N program.
