Since you claim to have served on a ship still designated a DE, I take it that you are a pre 1965 veteran?
I never did fill a body bag, fortunately. I only served at Madigan Army Hospital in 1971, and saw plenty of wars permanent injury and maiming, in our patients, returning from Viet Nam. Others on here have also served this country, like Bob..... So what is your issue, exactly?
It is the kind of accident that is hard to explain. And, the more we have come to know over the last tow days, the less makes sense. So, many of these questions are legitimate, and are going to be asked. And, based on my limited experience in the Army and on the RR, will be probably be answered pretty well by a competent Naval Board of Inquiry.
So, just maybe, when 7 sailors lose their lives and millions of dollars worth of taxpayer ship is wrecked, I would assert, that nobody here was making the sort of "smart ass" comments that you allude to, at least, until you added your two cents worth....?
