SP did it for safety. The seats had safety belts and everything was in reach so nobody had to get up. If the conductor had to use the desk, he knew where and when it wass safe to make a quick move.

I was surprised that UP kept with the cupola for the most part. They were great riding and had high speed trucks under them.
