Do not, under any circumstances, drive U.S. 95 north out of Coeur d'Alene unless you want to be many miles away from the railroad and get nailed at numerous traffic lights behind all the mall shoppers. You should instead use the old Trent Highway which parallels BNSF east from Spokane (Yarley/Parkwater to be exact) all the way to Rathdrum, and then from Rathdrum cut east to U.S. 95 for the rest of your drive up to Sandpoint. Otherwise, exit I-90 in Post Falls at either Pleasant View Road or Hwy 41 and head north to Hauser and Rathdrum. You'll also encounter the UP main along the way. Don't miss Hauser Yard.
