Sad, really, even though there were few places a railfan could see the operation.
As for reason: it wasn't just the locomotives. Read through the whole article, and find that they have gotten tired of maintaining the overhead too - and the safety aspect of having 50K over all the tracks when it comes time for maintenance. Excuses, really, not reasons, but it makes sense. The article says they thing they can spend more money on track maintenance if they don't have to work on the wire. A common viewpoint, really, in situations that don't need electrification for other reasons.
The article says they will "salvage" the old locos - for what? What parts are salvageable? And are the new GEs heavier than the old electrics? If so, they might need that extra track maintenance.
Loved the "selectric" comment. Yes, I immediately thought of the typewriter and wondered how one could pull a coal train. As for Mexican electrics - didn't BM&LP already buy at least one some years back?
