Hill Street Tunnel, North of First Street, then connecting to Sunset, all gone today, with about half of the hill, too. This reoute would have been severed when they built the huge trench for the Hollywood Freeway between Union Station down at Alameda Street, and the where the location of the 4 level interchange is, in downtown LA.

This tunnel was one the principle entry for Hollywood/Glendale/Valley/Beverly Hills/Santa Monica trains, until mid/late 1920's, when the "subway" from the end of Glendale Blvd, to the Subway Terminal Building was constructed, diverting those to the PE station serving the lines via Sunset to the west side . I've been told that, after the Subway Terminal station was built that this segment then only handled local Sunset Blvd and Echo Park services, until those service were abandoned (converted to "modern" buses), at the time of the construction of the 101/Hollywood Fwy, when this older tunnel and connection were severed, by that "trench" you go through on the Freeway today.

Today, with the topography lowered significantly, and Hill Street connecting through to Chinatown. This is where the LA County Superior Court, Kenneth Hahn County Hall of Administration are today, after "redevelopment" in the late 40's and early 50's. The Criminal Courts building (at the top of where the top of that "hill" would have been) Tunnel entrance in this picture would be about half a block south of where the Red Line Civic Center Subway entrance on Hill is located today.
