Railway Age is hardly a source to be summarily dismissed, unlike some of the more useless speculative crap we often see.
Although, it may be premature to speculate that a long underpowered train, with all power (and dynamic braking) "up front" might have caused the derailment, without more confirmation of the facts, the fact is that I've seen plenty of L over V incidents resulting in derailments, from issues with the length and make up of the train, and distribution of the power and dynamic braking.
I got out just before the black boxes came that will turn you in for using too much fuel, or power, or air, to second guess what you might be doing, or felt was the right thing to do in order to safely control the train you are operating....... And, none of my friends who are now retired or retiring didn't seem to like that change one little bit.
As I remember the slogan was "up the hill slow, down the hill fast, tonnage first, safety last".
