"El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula" -- named for the icons of Mary and angels in St. Francis of Assisi's tiny 9th Century chapel, which he called (in Italian) "la porziuncola", or "little portion".
The chapel still stands, enclosed within the huge Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, in the town of the same name, in the region of Umbria, in central Italy.
Recognizing the connection with the California city, the street in front of the basilica carries the name in Spanish, "Via Los Angeles".
