The limitation is not so much train platform length as train length blocking streets. A three car train is about fifty feet shorter than the sidewalk to sidewalk distance in San Rafael. I don't know about other locations and the reorganization of the SMART website to give information to riders, rather than those interested in construction, has made it difficult to find the drawings that were there of platforms.
