Slack with helpers

Physics was never my strong suit, so help me understand.

Assume a heavy freight train is going DOWNHILL on a mountain grade like Cajon or Tehachapi. What happens to the slack when you add a helper set to the very end of the train, and both the helpers and head end are in full dynamic braking? The slack becomes stretched or no?
