Wootten fireboxes were indeed used for burning large amounts of low - quality coal, or as noted above the small pieces of coal mixed with rock in culm piles. There was no need for a wootten firebox when burning high quality Anthracite coal; on the contrary the firebox grates, sides & bottom had to be thicker to withstand the higher BTU content of Anthracite.
