Santa Fe operated with their own track through the back streets of Albany Emeryville and Berkley until 1979, I have a photo somewhere of the last train running up the middle of Sacramento street in Berkley. Interesting times during the Viet Nam war era, they ran troop trains right past Cal Berkley where protesters sat on the tracks and tried to block the trains. It made the six o'clock news several times. They even shot live steam out of the front of the diesels (steam generator) to clear the line. After 79 they continued to run trains in Oakland on their own tracks but accessed via SP trackage rights. Might have ended after the 89 earthquake but could have lasted till the mergers. Prior to 1959 all Santa fe passenger jobs terminated in Oakland. A recent trains magazine map of the Santa fe did not include the Oakland line, I brought this to their attention but they never responded to it.
