I think of containers as being a way to transport goods from manufacturer to wholesaler (at least) in the same container which may travel on truck, train and ship in the process. But this is not what is happening here. In this example meat is shipped apparently in refrigerated rail cars, not containers, to Oakland where it is repacked into containers for shipment to Asia. Logs follow a similar process being shipped on open trucks to Oakland where they are repacked into containers. In both (and probably other) cases I wonder why the container isn't filled at the origin. Does anybody understand the efficiencies involved?
