I believe that BART and Muni trains (when they're in the subway under Market street) actually operate automatically and the operator only opens and closes the door manually when needed. So the technology already is in place.
Naturally there would be opposition from the unions representing the operators. I can't blame them for wanting to keep members employed but Golden Gate bridge toll collectors were bought out a few years ago and Caltrans is planning to phase out toll takers on other state run bridges.
Elevator operators and 411 operators are gone so someday BART operators will be bought out when the price is right.
