My understanding is that under the Ogden Gateway case, UP and SP divided freight solicitation from California via the Overland Route. UP could solicit north of Paso Robles (or Valley equivalent), SP south. After SP purchased SSW, SSW as a separate railroad could solicit north of Paso Robles. After the Staggers Act made solicitation moot, there was less and less reason for a separate SSW. Someone may be able to correct or clarify this.

Also, SSW lettered diesels for SSW from the start. FTs had a completely different paint scheme from SP as delivered.
