Unrelated to locomotives, preserving SSW provided additional revenue to SP. Note that the former Rock Island route from St. Louis to Santa Rosa, NM became part of SSW, not SP. (While the two former railroads used to switch operations at Tucumcari, CRIP owned the rails to Santa Rosa.) As an example, a theoretical shipment from Ohio to the west coast via St. Louis and El Paso would mean the originating railroad, say Conrail, would share the overall revenue with 2 additional railroads, SSW and SP.
