Reminds me of the couple of years just before Amtrak converted to holding tank toilets in the Superliners and many communities were making a stink (literally) about the waste being dumped on the right of way.

Rode the northbound Coast Starlight once and about an hour before arriving in Portland it was announced that the toilets would close in 10 minutes and stay closed until 10 minutes after the Vancouver, WA stop. Since we were running early, that translated into almost 2 hours before they reopened, and the rush to use the restrooms was on for about 15-20 minutes. At the time I thought that I would hate to be on the track crew that was assigned to the line north of Vancouver back then.
