Good questions!
My first preference would be an ex-CP or CN SW1200 / SW1200RS with a "C" engine, D15 main generator and FLEXICOIL trucks which is a easily maintained unit. We have been quite satisfied with our GMD1 and I might consider another one of those.
We have found the Flexicoil truck's adhesion to be superior to the AAR switcher truck and would not buy anything else.
The SW10 would still have AAR trucks and the maintainability without a complete set of schematics could be a challenge.
EMD built switchers as God intended...tough little workhorses and the five in our fleet do an excellent job for us.
