I wonder how much of the mainline rail on MRL might date back to Northern Pacific Days ??? NP was noted for using single shoulder tie plates, which allowed rails to move inward ( for better or worse ). I recall its' advantage was in allowing larger rail to be laid without having to replace the tie plates.
