Today would have been my Grandfather's 117th birthday. He worked 23 years for the CB&Q on the Alliance Division as a clerk, telegrapher, and agent. In 1942 he and my Grandmother and three children followed both sides of the family out to Oregon and gave up all his seniority. He thus worked as an operator at virtually every open office on the Siskiyou Line and Coos Bay Branch until he built up enough seniority to permanently settle in Corvallis. As a result of all the moving around my Mom boarded with a lady in Medford so she could attend high school in one place. My Grandad did not live to see the retirement he so looked forward to as he passed away from complications of a stroke at the SP Hospital in San Francisco in 1965.
