I'd like to chime in on Vance's message of thanks to Ed Von Nordeck. That Fallbrook excursions, which was the present from my parents for my 15th birthday. Probably the cheapest birthday my parents ever spent, all of $8.75, if I remember correctly. I found out about that excursion the same way Vance did, from Trains Magazines. (Go back to the 50s and 60s, and you'll be stunned how many excursions there were, and how cheap!)
Although I always loved trains, there were threethings that brought me up to being a railfan. The first is when my family moved to Orange in a house right next to the SP Tustin Branch at Villa Park station in July 1965. That brought me into daily contact with trains a three minute walk or one minute run, away, and resulted in cab and caboose rides. The second was my subscription to Trains Magazine in Febuary 1966. The last was that first excursion to Fallbrook.
Thanks Ed!
