A few of the older ones started out as ice houses. They supplied DLO/TIV refers with 50 to 100 lbs blocks of ice with an ice deck, roof high.

When the refers went to diesel generators, a lot of the ice houses didn't survive. A few did and those are the ones that may be next to a rail line. I was told it was a matter of adjusting the temps and adding areas that cooled but didn't freeze.
