Per Joe Strapac's Southern Pacific Historic Diesels Volume 14, in 1998 Union Pacific did contract with Locomotive Leasing Partners, which subbed out to VMV Enterprises the rebuilding of 40 ex - SP SD-45T-2R Tunnel Motors. These units had the 20V - 645 engines swapped out for 16V - 645 engines, and other improvements.
